President Donald Trump has announced a new arrangement to buy Russian diesel in volume, drawing an angry response from Ukraine and an immediate reaction in fuel markets.

Announcing the deal on Thursday, Trump said the United States would take 300,000 tons of Russian diesel immediately, followed by 500,000 tons in November, a million tons in the period after that and a further three million tons later. Diesel futures fell about 4 percent as traders weighed the prospect of additional supply.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticised the announcement, arguing that purchasing fuel from Russia undercuts pressure on Moscow’s war economy at a moment when Kyiv is asking partners to tighten, not loosen, energy sanctions.

The White House presented the arrangement as a practical step to keep diesel affordable for American truckers, farmers and industry, groups that have complained about fuel costs feeding into the price of almost everything that moves by road.

Details on how the purchases would be structured — and how they sit alongside existing sanctions and price-cap arrangements — were not fully laid out. Energy analysts said the market move reflected the headline volumes, but warned the real effect depends on delivery schedules and whether the cargoes displace other supply or add to it.

Diesel rarely makes political headlines, but it quietly prices almost everything on a shelf: it moves the trucks that stock supermarkets, the tractors that harvest crops and the generators that back up hospitals. Sustained relief at the pump tends to show up in inflation data within weeks, which is why the announcement drew market attention beyond the energy desk.

At the same time, any arrangement that normalises large-scale energy trade with Moscow will be read in European capitals as a test of sanctions unity. Expect the details of the first cargoes to be scrutinised as closely as the headline tonnage.
