The United States on October 9 imposed sanctions on two Mumbai-based companies, SSPL Solutions Private Limited and Samudra Marine Services Private Limited, along with five Indian nationals, according to reports. The action was announced as part of a US initiative called Operation Economic Outcast, which Washington says is directed against Iran and entities alleged to be supporting its petroleum trade.

According to reports, US authorities alleged that the two companies and the five individuals were involved in trading Iranian petroleum products. The designations place the named firms and individuals on the US sanctions list, a step that typically restricts their access to the American financial system and bars US persons and businesses from dealing with them.

The move is the latest in a series of measures through which Washington has sought to tighten economic pressure on Iran over its energy exports. Iranian petroleum shipments have long been a focus of US enforcement, and officials have repeatedly warned that companies and intermediaries in third countries could face secondary sanctions if they facilitate such trade.

India, one of the world’s largest energy importers, has historically sourced crude from a range of suppliers, and its refiners and trading firms operate within a complex web of global shipping, insurance and financing arrangements. According to reports, the latest designations underline how that network is coming under closer scrutiny as the United States steps up enforcement far beyond Iran’s immediate neighbourhood.

There was no immediate public response reported from the two Mumbai-based companies or the five individuals named in the announcement. It also remained unclear what immediate operational impact the sanctions would have on their business activities, or whether any further designations linked to the same operation would follow in the coming days.

The announcement adds to growing international attention on the shadow trade in sanctioned oil, in which cargoes are often moved through layered corporate structures and ship-to-ship transfers. According to reports, Washington has signalled that Operation Economic Outcast will continue to target networks it believes are helping Iran move petroleum products into global markets despite existing restrictions.
